Getting a new Kitten -- Tips for Kitten proofing your home.
When bringing a new kitten into your home keep in mind that they will be very playful and curious, which as we all know can at times get them into trouble. That’s why it is very important to kitten proof your home as much as possible. When you are in the process of kitten proofing your home keep in mind that a kitten has a much lower vantage point than you. Try an visualize what your kitten sees from his/her vantage point. Okay lets take a look at some ideas to kitten proof your home.
Make sure to secure all screens on windows, many kittens will enjoy sitting in a window and a loose screen can lead to a fall.
Always make sure all cleaning supplies, paint, disinfectants, etc, are kept out of your kittens reach.
Make sure to keep toilet lids closed. Kittens are attracted to the water and may want to drink from the bowl. The lid could close trapping your kitten, not to mention the chemicals used to clean the toilet bowls are not healthy for your kitten.
House plants are another potential problem. Many house plants can be hazardous to your kitten. Please find a list of some of those plants here:
A lesser known problem is plastic six pack holders. When you purchase beverages in a six pack form many times this is how they are packaged. Cut the holders apart to prevent trouble. This also helps to protect wildlife that may encounter this type of packing.
Make sure medication is out of reach. Even aspirin, which we all have at home, can be dangerous.
Dresser drawers, trunks, closets, all can be dangerous for kittens. They love to sleep in warm, dark places, which they can become trapped in.
Sewing supplies also need to be kept out of reach. Buttons, needles, pins, thread, all could be swallowed, which is dangerous to your kitten.
Everyone seems to think it is cute for a kitten to play with a ball of yearn. However this can be dangerous as it can become a choking hazardous.
Children’s toys contain many small parts that can be harmful.
Electrical cords can be very hazardous, especially if you have a cat that enjoys chewing.
Be careful when opening refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers, etc. as some kittens may jump inside and become trapped.
Plastic bags. We all bring these home from food stores, etc, they can become choking hairdos and your kitten can also become trapped inside.
Think as your kitten as a new child ( and basically they are ) and what is not good for a new baby would not be good for a new kitten. This is a great rule of thumb.
By keeping this in mind and some common sense you can kitten proof your home successfully.
