Get ready to head to New Orleans for the AVMA convention

Registering for the 2008 AVMA Annual Convention in the Big Easy couldn't be easier at www.avmaconvention.org , which also offers extensive convention information and a virtual visit to New Orleans.

One feature of the Web site is a snappy video travelogue showing off the city's lively sights and sounds. Dr. Gregory S. Hammer, AVMA president, narrated the video on location with Dr. David P. Hesse, a native of New Orleans and the alternate delegate from Louisiana to the AVMA House of Delegates. The two-minute travelogue gives a glimpse of the city's vibrant culture.

"As a native of New Orleans, I may be more than a little bit biased, but I don't think you'll find a more exciting, colorful, or interesting city anywhere," Dr. Hesse said. "Mardi Gras, Bourbon Street, jazz, fine restaurants, the Garden District, and even a streetcar named Desire-they're all here and waiting for you and your family."

The travelogue also touts the educational sessions and other events of the 145th AVMA Annual Convention, July 19-22, 2008.

"New Orleans is open, ready, and waiting for the AVMA," Dr. Hammer said. "We look forward to seeing you in the Crescent City."

Attendees can start planning their trip now by checking the convention Web site for New Orleans updates and visitor information. The General Information section provides maps, links to restaurants and other attractions, discount coupons, and transportation details. The page for frequently asked questions offers answers to common convention and registration inquiries. In the About Us section, the Contact Us function allows attendees to sign up for an electronic newsletter with convention updates.

Registration begins Jan. 15. A link on the convention site's home page connects directly to the VeriSign secure online registration site. Online registrants will be able to tell in real time which hotel options and prices are still available. The Registration and Housing section provides complete information, including maps and a printable registration form for faxing or mailing to the AVMA.

The AVMA offers advance registration from Jan. 15-April 21, preconvention registration from April 22-June 20, and on-site registration from July 18-22. The fees increase by $25 to $50, depending on the category, with each registration period. Registering early saves money and offers the best housing choices.

Because no trip to New Orleans would be complete without sampling the unique cuisine, the AVMA has partnered with some of the city's popular restaurants to create the AVMA Signature Series Recipes. The first recipe card appeared in the Jan. 1 issue of the JAVMA , and a new card will appear in the journal each month.
